To understand why this 500th match matters, you have to look at the sheer volume of runs Westley has accumulated over his tenure. He isn’t a “boom or bust” player; he is a “steady and sure” operator. His ability to pile up hundreds of runs season after season makes him one of the most bankable assets in the county game.
The following table provides a snapshot of how consistent Westley has been across recent seasons:
| Season | Matches Played | Runs Scored | Batting Average | 50s / 100s | Strike Rate (Approx) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2018-19 | 14 | 780 | 39.00 | 6 / 3 | 65.4 |
| 2019-20 | 15 | 820 | 41.11 | 7 / 4 | 66.8 |
| 2020-21 | 12 | 640 | 38.66 | 5 / 2 | 64.2 |
| 2021-22 | 16 | 910 | 45.50 | 8 / 5 | 68.1 |
| 2022-23 | 14 | 790 | 43.88 | 6 / 3 | 67.5 |
These numbers reflect a player who is constantly improving his craft while maintaining a high level of output. While many players see their averages dip as they age, Westley has managed to keep his in the low-to-mid 40s consistently, which is exceptional for a specialist middle-order batsman who often faces the most difficult spells of the day.
Essex cricket thrives on reliability. When the top order collapses under the pressure of a new ball or a tricky surface, the team looks to Westley to steady the ship. This 500th match appearance serves as a reminder that while modern cricket loves “X-factor” moments, there is still immense value in someone who can stay at the crease for four hours and put up a respectable total.
He provides the backbone that allows more aggressive players to play freely down the order. Without his ability to occupy the crease, the team dynamic would shift toward high-risk maneuvers far too early. By scoring 102 on such a significant occasion, he has rewarded the fans who have watched him battle out these long days of cricket for years. It is a victory for the “slow burn” style of play that keeps first-
